Even though this was a different contest (to jam the code into as small of a space as possible), this kind of stuff started off as some guys getting together and mixing their talents to take PCs to the next level. Everyone from sound composers to programmers to artists were involved in making "demos" for the scene. Back before we had 3DGaming and such, this was all we had and it was spectacular. I remember some of the bigger gatherings in the Netherlands and such way back in the day and how I wish I could have gone. Anyway, for those interested in demos, there's a great DVD out that goes through the history of them and includes lots of newer stuff as well. A lot of it is older stuff that the newer generation might not appreciate but some of it is great eye candy. Check it out at http://www.mindcandydvd.com/
